For my honors project, I want to create a modern minimalist portrait, of myself or someone else. I plan to do this on Adobe Illustrator. I want to do this project on Illustrator because I find myself doing my best work on this software. I will need to know how to effectively and efficiently use Adobe Illustrator to complete this project. I will also need to have a computer compatible with the software as well as downloaded. I will need to have this project finished towards the end of second semester. To maximize my time I will try to come in extra and also work on the beginning of the project outside of my time given. The only obstacles I can see myself encountering would be my time management throughout the completion of the project.
For this project, I decided to do a few portraits including my boyfriend, some close friends, and myself. I really enjoyed creating these portraits because although they are very simple, they did leave room for some creativity when deciding which features to include and to not include, as well as how complex each specific detail was.
Below is the process of completing one of the designs a few steps at a time. The order is from the original photo, to the end result. Typically, I started with the head/face and continued from there. This design in particular was difficult because of the dimension in the hair and bathing suit. However, the challenge made it all the more fun.
Check out my reflection on this project.
For my advanced digital media honors project, I decided to do flat design portraits. When we were first assigned this project, I wasn’t really sure what part of digital media I wanted to use. After a couple weeks of working with the graphics aspect of digital media, I knew that I wanted my project to be a graphics project. But even though I knew what I wanted to use, I still wasn’t completely sure what I actually wanted to do for the project. I looked on Pinterest for a couple of ideas and came across designs that I was really interested in. I had seen flat portraits in the past but before taking this class I never really knew what they were. In the beginning of this project, I had a bit of a rocky start. I tried using pictures that didn’t really work well with the flat portrait design. I started to get discouraged by this. I ended up doing some digging through my pictures to find something I wanted to use, but I had very little to offer myself. I turned to a few of my friends who then sent me pictures to use which helped me a great deal. Once I got the hang of the process, the rest was a breeze. I had a whole system of how to create my designs. I’m glad I overcame my setback as quickly as I did so that I had enough time to finish all of my portraits. My favorite design is the one of my best friend Sarah Tate. She is wearing a black bathing suit with sunglasses. I think I liked drawing hers the best because it had so many different parts to it. I loved how much dimension was in her hair as well as how many pieces it actually took to make the bathing suit. Overall, It was just a really fun process and portrait to design. Throughout this project, I learned a lot about myself as a graphics artist. For one, I learned that I can overcome setbacks that are sent my way. I also learned what kind of graphics project I am really into as well as the program I like to use the best, which is Adobe Illustrator.
